From The Thurlaston Carnival Committee
The Annual General Meeting of Thurlaston Village Hall was held recently. Chairman Val Holyman, Secretary Marion Tarratt and Treasurer Malcolm Tarratt were re-elected as were the rest of the management committee. The representatives of the village groups who use the Hall regularly were confirmed.

An additional item on the agenda was the presentation of a cheque for £1625.83 to the Hall funds as a result of Paul Holyman taking part in the 'Great North Run', with matched funding by Barclays Bank plc. This donation is greatly appreciated and will assist in keeping the Hall in good condition for use by the local community.

Local horse-rider Emily Smith has been chosen to represent the East Midlands in the Olympics to be held in Leicester next July. Leicester is the only city in the country to have hosted the games twice.
Emily nearly missed the qualifying event in September as she was so busy competing locally in showing classes that she was unaware of it. However, she managed to enter in three events: dressage, horsemanship and a 'working trail'. She was placed first in both dressage and horsemanship receiving a medal, rosettes and a certificate from the Mayoress of Leicester.
Although living locally, she will live in the Olympic village during the games to enable her to be with her fellow competitors and to take an active role in the ceremonies and other activities.
Emily is currently trained by her mum, Sarah, and sister, Grace - both accomplished horse-riders. Sarah is the information officer for the Down's Heart Group.

From Thurlaston Sports Club:-
A group of self confessed 'nutcases' from the village of Thurlaston have foolishly agreed to run the Leicester half marathon on Sunday 19th October in order to raise money for Thurlaston Magpies FC. Even more foolishly the team has only started training with six weeks to go before the big day - it will be a tall order to prepare in the time available.
The club has many ages of football teams from the Saturday morning club for the under 6's through to adult football. It also has players from all of the surrounding villages to Thurlaston - Huncote, Croft, Enderby, Earl Shilton, Sapcote, Stoney Stanton, Peckleton, LFE, Cosby, Broughton Astley - the list is endless. It also has a cricket team.

From Leicestershire County Council
People are being called upon to join a growing network of Heritage Wardens to help monitor and conserve the rich heritage of Leicestershire's countryside.
Heritage Wardens go out in their local areas and to record all aspects of wildlife and the countryside, from surveying habitats to discovering signs of past inhabitants.
The Heritage Warden scheme already has 169 active volunteers in 129 parishes - about 44 per cent of Leicestershire and Rutland - but more are needed to join the network (including Thurlaston), and help with this important work.

Photos of the Thurlaston Carnival on June 2008.
The weather was once again kind to the 37th Thurlaston Carnival and Craft Fair on June 14. Hundreds of people saw a day of free entertainment led by the 'Piston Rings' Youth Motor Cycle Club of Nuneaton and included the Barwell Church Lads' and Girls' Brigade Band, Under 6s Football Tournament, Country Dancing and a Fun Dog Show. There were many stalls, traditional games and rides to tempt people to part with their money, which will be used to help village groups and other charities.

Now, if I told you that two fellas had called on me and told me they had a bit of tarmac left over from a job; would I like my drive tarmacing? You wouldn't be surprised if the result was like in the photo below.
Regrettably, this is a photo of the bridge over the motorway on Thurlaston Lane and the work was, presumably, supervised by the Local Authority. Given year on year tax increases, way above the rate of inflation, you'd think that the Authorities would ensure that we get good value for money - lads, it's a lovely smooth surface but it's got a big dip in the middle!

Many thanks to Pete Davies for the photo.

This website is not here for me to express my, often bizarre, personal opinions about religion, politics, or anything else for that matter – but on this occasion I just can't contain myself.
Whilst I can smile at the irony of the Australian Goverment sending their criminals to Britain, I am ashamed that Gurkha ex-serviceman are denied entry.
The vchero website says:
Those rejected have included Tul Bahadur Pun VC (a Gurkha who won the Victoria Cross in World War II) and Lance Corporal Gyanendra Rai (a Gurkha seriously wounded by Argentine artillery at Bluff Cove, in the Falkland Islands in 1982). British Visa Officers say that these brave Gurkhas do not have "strong ties" to the United Kingdom, despite years of service in the British Army.
Tul Bahadur Pun VC has subsequently been allowed entry.
What closer tie is there to a country than to be seriously injured fighting for it?
The Gurkhas, many based only a few miles away at Wolvey, continue their proud service to the Crown fighting in Afganistan and who was fighting alongside them recently? Why Price Harry of course! Good enough to share the same billet as the third-in-line to the throne but not to live in the same Country?
Our Government should be ashamed of itself.

If you have come to this page via the Thurlaston Online home-page you may have noticed that it has a different layout.
I am gradually changing the whole site – I felt it needed a 'wash & brush-up'.
The old pages will be changed over the coming weeks. If you come across areas of the site that don't work please let me know – something always gets overlooked when you're doing this sort of thing!
