Thurlaston Against Speeding (TAS) is a small group of local residents who, together with the Parish Council, feel passionate about excessive traffic speeds through the village.
Committee member Tracy Johnson says:
Speeding traffic through Thurlaston has been identified as a significant issue.
Traffic travelling too fast past the garden centre on Croft Road, as well as the village being used as a cut-through, appear to be just two of the issues. Obviously, the most worrying times of the day are when our children are going to and returning from school.
In nearby villages where traffic speed has been an issue, residents in these local communities have worked together to find long term solutions to reduce speeding traffic.
Thurlaston Against Speeding (TAS) is a small group of local residents who, together with the Parish Council, feel passionate about excessive traffic speeds through our village.
During a recent visit to County Hall we looked at several Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) that have been tested and proven to have a positive impact in reducing traffic speed. These are the type of sign that flash-up the set speed limit if being exceeded by the approaching vehicle, making the driver aware that they should slow down.
Our ambition over the next 12 months is to raise sufficient funds to purchase one of these VAS devices for Thurlaston. As it is battery operated it can be moved around the village and positioned to optimise its effectiveness at reducing speeding traffic. We will need to purchase the device ourselves, as it will not be funded by the local authority. These VAS devices cost between £2,675 and £2,995 each.
We are planning various fund raising events in 2011, where we hope to raise enough money to purchase a VAS speed monitoring device. We have currently raised £590 hence we still have some way to go. We will only be able to purchase this device by raising the money though fund raising and donations so if you feel you are able to make a donation we would be absolutely thrilled.
We are confident that we can achieve our objectives; principally to ensure we have done all we can to reduce the risk of serious injury to pedestrians, and potential damage to property, caused by speeding traffic in our village.
We will keep you up-to-date with our progress via www.thurlastononline.co.uk and by newsletter. If you would like to make any comments or suggestions with regards to the TAS project, simply contact us by e-mail or on any of the phone numbers below. Plans to switch off Thurlaston's street-lights between midnight and 5.30am are now at the consultation stage.
The plans will see whole areas of Thurlaston with no street lights during these hours. Moat Close, Nursery Close and Tyers Close will have all their lights extinguish. Desford road will be without lights from Enderby Road to the bend in the road just before the flats. Normanton Grove and Holt Crescent will be, in the main, still fully lit.
According to the County Council's risk assessment: "(it is) Highly unlikely that pedestrians or vehicles will be active during these hours"; a somewhat presumptuous assumption on the part of the bureaucrats.
On the arterial roads throughout the village there will be lighting at the junction of: Enderby Road and Desford Road, Tyers Close and Main Street, Church Street and Main Street, Croft Road and Nursery Close, Church Street and New Walk, Desford Road and Holt Crescent; and at the bend before the flats on Desford Road.
The changes are said to be in order to make savings on energy costs, reduce carbon emissions and reduce light pollution. Whether the latter two will be achieved when street-lights are inevitably replaced by security lighting on individual houses is debatable. What is clear though is that if we want lighting after Midnight we will pay twice for the privilege.
Maps showing details of the plans are available online at:
Should you wish to make any comments on these proposals, please respond by email to jake.richardson@leics.gov.uk, or phone 0116 3055568. The closing date for comments is 16th April 2010.
